Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) sold Secure Communities as a program targeting dangerous criminal immigrants. Yet the majority (79 percent) of people deported due to this program were non-criminals or picked up for lower-level offenses, such as traffic offenses or petty juvenile mischief, according to data uncovered by the Immigration Justice Clinic at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, National Day Laborer’s Organizers Network and the Center for Constitutional Rights.
Public records obtained by FIAC show how the Secure Communities burdens local law enforcement. Despite local law enforcement concerns about it being a resource drain and its speedy implementation, the program expanded in Florida from 24 counties to 67 in a single day. See below:
