Judge Barkett was appointed to the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals in 1994, the latest highlight on a journey that began in Mexico where she was born to parents who had emigrated from Syria. Along the way she was a teacher, a member of a religious order, and graduated law school near the top of her class. In 1985, she became the first woman Associate Justice on the Florida Supreme Court, and in 1992, her colleagues selected her to become Chief Justice, the first woman to hold that position.
