ABOUT THE COALITION
The Florida Immigrant Coalition is a network of groups and individuals working together for fair treatment of Florida's immigrants. The Coalition meets its mission through advocacy, community empowerment, public education, technical assistance and referral. The Coalition's Direction Committee includes urban, rural, religious, legal, and community-based organizations. The Coalition is a program of the Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center.
STRUCTURE OF THE COALITION
The Coalition is composed of members who are committed to fighting for the rights of immigrants. Many members work for organizations that address issues in the immigrant community. The Coalition's Direction Committee meets regularly to establish goals and implement work plans to combat specific issues. Issues range from local advocacy to working for state and national policy changes.
ACTIVITIES OF THE COALITION INCLUDE:
- Convening annual Florida Immigrant Summit in Miami
- Engaging Florida groups in national campaigns to promote fair policies for immigrants
- Leading a campaign to establish Florida a health and nutrition program
- Distributing timely information to coalition members
- Other Concerns of the Florida Immigrant Coalition
- Securing health insurance for all needy immigrants on the county, state, and national levels
- Encouraging development of leadership skills in the immigrant community
- Promoting just employment rights for Florida's immigrants
- Ensuring that immigrant students have access to the same resources and opportunities available to other students.
- Fighting for legalization and other immigration remedies that would allow for full civic participation
- Removing obstacles to safety?net benefits for vulnerable immigrants
